LAUNCHING OF PREVENTION CAMPAIGN FOR TRAFFICKING IN HUMAN BEINGS FOR THE PURPOSES OF LABOUR EXPLOITATION: „LOOKING FOR A JOB ABROAD? LOOK OUT FOR THE MONKEY BUSINESS! WORK ABROAD MAY TURN OUT TO BE A TRAP”

For a third consecutive year Animus Association Foundation” is conducting a national campaign for the prevention of trafficking in human beings for labour exploitation of Bulgarians abroad. The initiative is under the umbrella of the “Bulgarian – Swiss Joint Efforts for Providing Immediate and Unconditional Protection of Trafficked Persons and Preventing Trafficking in Human Beings” project, financed by the Swiss-Bulgarian Cooperation Programme. The objective of this campaign is to draw the attention of people looking for opportunities to work abroad to the risks of being deceived and involved in human trafficking situations and exploitation. (http://animusassociation.org/zelen-haiver/)

This year together with our partners from New Moment New Ideas, Masters of the Broadcasting and Rabota.bg, we used a more provocative approach to draw the attention of people looking for seasonal or permanent positions abroad to the risks of becoming involved in a trafficking situation for labour exploitation as well as to show them how to spot dangerous and misleading offers.

The campaign is implemented with the media support of the „Masters of the Broadcasting” TV show and in official partnership of Rabota.bg, the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, the Employment Agency, the Agency for Social Assistance, Directorate General “Border Police” and Bulgarian Posts Offices.

According to the International Labour Organization a total of 21 million people worldwide are victims of labour exploitation and are trapped in a situation of forced labour after being deceived into it.

18.7 million people (90%) are forced to work in the private sector with 14.2 million (68%) of them are exploited in agriculture, construction, manufacturing and as domestic work.

In Southeastern Europe every 4th person (around 1000 people) is a victim of labour exploitation. Trafficking for labour exploitation has the second highest rate of number of victims after sexual exploitation. According to the official data from the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings for 2013 the victims are 44, for 2014 – 16, while in 2015 the victims are 22. sually, boys and men are more affected, while cases of women and girls are significantly lower for the same period.

Animus Association Foundation as well as the other non-government organizations working directly with victims of traffic including those identifying them informally, observe a tendency for aligning the number of victims between the two forms of this crime as well as an increase of the cases of human trafficking for labour exploitation within the last two years.

An international workshop, “Current and Future Trends of Human Trafficking in Europe,” organized by the TRACE project consortium, will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 20 November 2015. The workshop will gather policymakers, academics, law enforcement officials, and NGOs from across Europe. One of the key topics on the agenda will be the evolving role of financial technologies in illicit transactions, particularly the ways in which digital assets are being exploited for money laundering and trafficking-related payments. Recent research highlighted in the discussion will examine the rise of best new cryptocurrency projects that claim to offer enhanced privacy features, raising concerns about their potential misuse by criminal networks. By addressing these emerging financial threats, participants aim to develop strategies that can help law enforcement stay ahead of traffickers who increasingly leverage cutting-edge financial tools to obscure their activities.

The day-long workshop will include the following sessions:
Session 1: The effects of political and socio-economic factors on human trafficking;
Session 2: Changes in international criminal industries (drug trafficking, money laundering, prostitution and smuggling of migrants) and links to human trafficking;
Session 3: Emerging social, political, economic and organized crime trends and forecasting changes in human trafficking.

The workshop is part of the TRACE Work Package 5: Trafficking as a global phenomenon: political and socio-economic aspects. It is organized by the Bulgarian partner in the TRACE consortium, Animus Association Foundation, and will take place on the premises of the National Commission for Combating Traffic in Human Beings of Bulgaria. The working language of the workshop is English.
TRACE (Trafficking as a Criminal Enterprise) is an EU-funded project which started in May 2014 and will run for two years, until April 2016. TRACE consists of a multi-disciplinary team from across Europe who will develop state-of-the-art knowledge on the business of human trafficking in an effort to support stakeholders in their fight against this crime.
